The name Lions Rising comes from the Percy Bysshe Shelley poem from 1819, “The Mask of Anarchy”—a famous political poem which has inspired slogans used in revolutionary and labor movements throughout the world.
The prints borrow heavily from labor history. “Don't Mourn, Organize” is a quote by labor activist, wobbly, and songwriter Joe Hill, who gave his life to the labor movement and was executed by firing squad. “Equal Rights to All; Special Privileges to None” is a campaign slogan from The People's Party from 1892, an anti-monopoly, anti-corporate platform supported by Eugene V. Debs and other labor leaders.
