Bang Bang2024

Bang Bang Podcast Design
Bang Bang is a podcast about war movies, hosted by two antiwar advocates and veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Van Jackson and Lyle Jeremy Rubin. Van is an Air Force vet and a former Pentagon strategist under Obama, and a professor of international studies who has written numerous books on anti-imperialism, and is a frequent critic of The Blob (the foreign policy establishment). Lyle is a former U.S. Marine, a writer for various publications, and recently wrote a memoir about his personal journey from arch conservative to anticapitalist. Together, they wrestle with themes of toxic patriotism, bloodlust, sexuality, and masculinity in these films and how public perception is shaped through the medium of movies and tv shows. They’re also just fun guys to listen to.

I worked with Van and Lyle to develop a general identity for the podcast cover and bonus episodes, the website and all social channels, and videos and livestream episodes. We wanted to emphasize the GWOT (Global War on Terror) era, the disorienting and trippy nature of war as is often portrayed in film, and weapons as a phallic extension of masculinity, and settled on the sight device/video camera viewfinder to tie war and cinema together.

Quindar2016

Quindar Design
Quindar is a collaborative music project by James Merle Thomas, an art historian, curator, and musician, and Mikael Jorgensen, keyboardist of Wilco, inspired by NASA’s audio, film, and visual archives. As Thomas recounts in ArsTechnica, he “got the idea to explore space music when working as a fellow at the Air and Space Museum embedded in its history division. He told NPR that he came across lots of old 16mm film and audio from seemingly mundane sessions, but this minutiae captivated him.” The name ‘Quindar’ comes from the radio communication signal tones used for NASA's Apollo space missions.

As the project was launching, I worked with James and Mikael on their first ep cover, Twin Pole Sunshade, in addition to design consultation, merch, animated shorts and promotion for their early live shows and events. All the designs, typography, color palettes, patterns, and isolated language were derived from the vast media archives from the Skylab and Apollo missions. As recordings were remixed and sampled in the music, archival video footage was also sampled and projected at the live DJ sets.
